In a quaint French bistro, four literary aficionados, immersed in the world of theatre, find themselves tangled in a profound debate - is the essence of life drawn from comedy or tragedy? Al ignites the discourse, introducing the enigmatic figure of Melinda Robicheaux, a woman caught in the whirlwind of her own life's turmoil. Once married to a physician, she had impulsively set sail on a romantic odyssey with a man she believed was her dream come true. Yet, as reality sunk in, her dream morphed into a nightmare. As a troubled guest crashing a crucial business dinner party, Melinda's presence serves as the catalyst for a multitude of unfolding dramas. Not only does she attempt to piece together her shattered existence with the help of the dinner party attendees, some of them harbouring their own hidden agendas, but her sudden appearance also reveals the festering cracks in the relationships of the couples present. Her story even manages to fracture a bond of friendship that had survived since their college days. The narrative shifts between two contrasting versions of Melinda's fate, as proposed by the tragedy-writer Max and the comedy-writer Sy. In Max's grim rendition, Melinda, disillusioned and heartbroken, is a woman abandoned by her husband, stripped of her children, and spiralling into a suicidal depression. She emerges as a haunted figure, straight-jacketed by the confines of a mental ward. Sy, on the other hand, paints a lighter, comic image. His Melinda, though still at life's mercy, is a childless woman residing beneath the apartment of the ambitious indie filmmaker Susan and the under-employed actor Hobie, the hosts of the pivotal dinner party. As the narrative oscillates between these two renditions, it highlights the dichotomous nature of life, embodying both comedy and tragedy, as seen through the eyes of the two Melindas.
