Plot

In the tumultuous landscape of 1972 America, Mark Felt, a loyal and meticulous FBI insider for three decades, finds himself overlooked for the position of Director following the death of J. Edgar Hoover, a man whose controversial tenure was tightly woven with Felt's own career. This snub, a stinging affront to Felt and his wife Audrey, who have surrendered personal lives in service to the Bureau, casts a shadow on their ongoing search for their estranged daughter, Joan, who disappeared into anti-establishment anonymity a year prior. The Bureau, now under the stewardship of L. Patrick Gray, an outsider in the eyes of many, is soon embroiled in a complex case known as Watergate. This infamous incident involves a break-in and surveillance operation at the Democratic National Committee offices, with murky links leading back to the Committee for the Re-Election of the President and, potentially, the Republican administration within the White House itself. The investigation, however, is muzzled by unofficial directives seemingly filtering down from the highest echelons of power. In a bold departure from his life-long dedication to the rules, Felt takes a rogue stance, driven by a determination to restore the FBI's independence from political interference. His audacious gambit involves leaking crucial information regarding the Watergate investigation to the media, first to a trusted friend at Time magazine, Sandy Smith, then to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Felt, adopting the cryptic alias 'Deep Throat', becomes an enigmatic figurehead for the public, sparking a nationwide guessing game of his true identity. Navigating the treacherous waters of Nixon's re-election, Felt must evade the relentless pursuit of his identity by an administration willing to employ every resource, both legal and illicit, to unmask Deep Throat. His mission becomes a precarious balancing act of shielding his own identity, while also protecting his FBI colleagues from suspicion and preserving the Bureau's integrity. This is the story of Mark Felt - the man who dared to challenge the White House, and in doing so, changed the course of history.
