Plot

In the heart of 1950s Czechoslovakia, amidst the stifling grip of Communism, we meet Karel Cernik, a resilient circus manager with a daring plan for freedom. His audacious scheme involves using the vibrancy and chaos of his own circus as a smokescreen to cross the heavily guarded border. After three tension-filled years of meticulous planning, his idea is on the brink of execution, when an unexpected invitation from the Secret Police sends chills down his spine. Cernik soon realizes he's being watched. An informant lurks within his circus troupe, shadowing his moves and whispering his secrets to the Secret Police. To reach the tantalizing promise of freedom offered by the American presence in a neighboring border village, Cernik must secure a special permit. This permit, as elusive as a wisp of smoke, would grant his circus the liberty to perform near the border, a crucial element of his daring escape plan. Complicating matters further, Cernik's personal life teeters on a tightrope. His wife's infidelity stings, his daughter's budding romance with the new stable boy bewilders him, and the steady disintegration of his beloved circus threatens to crush his spirit. As if the mounting pressure wasn't enough, Cernik's longtime adversary, Barovik, waits in the wings, ready to pounce and claim the circus as his own. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown in this tale of courage, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of freedom.
