Plot

Set amidst the turmoil of war and the tranquility of the countryside outside New York City, "Make Your Own Bed" (1944) spins a delightful tale of deception, domesticity, and drama. Industrialist Walter Whirtle, whose seemingly innocuous cosmetics company conceals a clandestine gunpowder operation, and his former stage actress wife Vivian, are struggling to find domestic help. Vivian, a city lover, would much rather enjoy a fully serviced urban life, a notion that clashes with Walter's preference for rural tranquility. Their domestic dilemma appears to find a solution in the form of Jerry Curtis, a recently fired private investigator. Walter hires Jerry under the guise of a covert operation, tasking him to pose as a butler and chauffeur to root out a supposed affair between Vivian and their despised neighbour, Boris Fenilise, as well as investigate an unspecified foreign intrigue. To add more excitement to Jerry's mission, Walter invites to their home a quartet of actors, hired by his company's advertising firm, to play Germans in an upcoming radio show. Walter cunningly presents these actors to Jerry as potential Nazi spies. Jerry, hopeful that this job may pave the way to his own detective agency and eventual marriage to his patient fiancée, Susan Courtney, recruits her as a cook and maid to maintain his cover. As Jerry and Susan juggle their household duties, which they are woefully unprepared for, they also navigate through Walter's labyrinth of secrets and lies. Their mission is made more complex by their need to preserve Susan's true marital status and Jerry's run-ins with the beguiling German actresses. Unbeknownst to Walter and Vivian, the actors aren't who they seem, leading to a cavalcade of confusion and comedy. "Make Your Own Bed" is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, fabricated dangers, and romantic complications, all set against a backdrop of a war-ridden world and a peaceful country home. Join Jerry and Susan as they wade through this comical chaos, one domestic disaster at a time.
