In the year 1952, young Mike Shea embarks on a journey to California, seeking a fresh start, but fate has other plans. His life is cut short when he performs a heroic act that results in his untimely demise. Despite the unresolved issues in his life, including an unstable job and a fleeting love, he finds himself unprepared to bid farewell to the world of the living. Transported to a fantastical realm known as Heaven, Mike discovers that even in the afterlife, human emotions persist. He experiences a profound romantic love when he encounters a "new" soul, Annie Packert, a being who has yet to experience life on Earth. A deep connection blossoms between them, only to be challenged by the rules of Heaven, which state that the course of one's next life is influenced by their time in the celestial realm.
