Plot

Set against the backdrop of the Alabama heartland, Lifted (2010) unfolds the life of Henry Matthews, a remarkable young R&B artist grappling with the turbulence of adolescence and the harsh realities of life. As his father, a fellow hip-hop enthusiast and dedicated marine, is stationed far away in the arid landscapes of Afghanistan, Henry's world begins to crumble. Simultaneously, his mother, a heroin addict on the long road to recovery, grapples with their worsening financial crisis, leading to the loss of their home. Forced into the unwelcoming arms of his prejudiced, abusive grandfather, Henry finds solace in the rhythm of his music, his melodic sanctuary amidst the storm. Despite the cascading adversity, Henry's spirit remains undeterred. With the guidance of a local pastor, he hones his singing and songwriting skills, his passionate voice echoing the pain of his reality. He aims to enter a high-stakes teen singing competition, a beacon of hope in the gloom, promising not just a considerable cash prize but also a chance for escape from the world that is relentlessly falling apart. 'Lifted' is a captivating tale of resilience and the power of music, a testament to a young boy's dream that dances on the delicate edge of despair and hope. As the clock ticks closer to his father's return, the competition becomes more than a contest—it becomes a race against time, a fight for survival, and a melody of hope strummed on the strings of adversity.
