Plot

In the heart of a bustling maternity ward, a manipulative game of revenge takes a dramatic turn. Infused with vengeance, a scorned nurse (Catherine Hiegel) conducts a daring act of infantile identity theft to settle a score with her philandering doctor lover (Daniel Gélin). Two newborns, their destinies unknowingly intertwined, are thrust into worlds far removed from their biological roots. The wealthy Le Quesnoy family, bathed in privilege and propriety, unwittingly welcomes a daughter from the other side of the track. Simultaneously, the rambunctious Groseille clan, notorious for their criminal tendencies and boisterous laughter despite hardship, finds their home graced by the presence of a boy born with a silver spoon. A dozen years run their course before the shocking truth surfaces, unravelling the fabric of both families' existence. As revelations spill out, they are met with a surprising lack of outrage, and the switched children (Valérie Lalande and Benoît Magimel) continue to blossom in their adopted families. "Life is a Long Quiet River" (1988) sails through the turbulent waters of social class and familial ties, exploring the chaos that ensues when lives are switched at birth. The film delicately balances comedy with drama, weaving a tapestry of human emotions and relationships that will leave you pondering the true essence of family and identity.
