Plot

Jesse Fisher, a 35-year-old New York City admissions officer with an unquenchable love for English and literature, finds his life lacking the luster of passion it once thrived on. His latest relationship has crumbled, leaving him emotionally adrift, and his enthusiasm for life has dwindled in the harsh reality of adulthood. An invitation to the retirement dinner of his second favorite professor, Peter Hoberg, from his alma mater in Ohio, offers a flicker of hope to rekindle his lost passion. As Jesse navigates the familiar yet changed university landscape, he encounters five individuals who could hold the key to his emotional rebirth. There's Hoberg, stubbornly refusing to bow to the inevitable retirement; Judith Fairfield, Jesse's cherished professor, admired for reasons distinct from his admiration for Hoberg; Nat, a whimsical free spirit who strolls through life on his own unconventional path; Dean, an undergraduate student who reflects a younger, more destructive version of Jesse's past self; and most importantly, Zibby, a 19-year-old undergraduate student. Zibby, a young woman seemingly seasoned by wisdom far beyond her years, captivates Jesse. Despite their significant age gap, an intense attraction blooms between them, stirring up a whirlwind of emotions Jesse thought he had lost. Through this unexpected connection with Zibby, Jesse is forced to confront his life choices, reevaluate his past, and perhaps even rediscover his passion for life. The journey of Liberal Arts is a poignant exploration of the human heart's capacity to grow, change, and find unexpected warmth in the most unlikely places.
