Plot

In the heart of Harold Chasen's solitary existence lies a morbid fascination with death, a fascination that finds expression in staged suicides, attending strangers' funerals, and driving a hearse. This obsession with mortality leaves him friendless, much to the dismay of his wealthy, exasperated mother who yearns for him to embrace normalcy. Her attempts to alter his course include thrusting him into therapy and arranging dates with potential girlfriends through a computer dating service. However, it is amidst the solemnity of funerals that Harold's life takes an unexpected turn. Here, he meets Maude, a woman on the brink of her eightieth birthday, who, unlike Harold, teems with an infectious zest for life. Maude, a serial funeral crasher herself, lives for experiences, often 'borrowing' material possessions without permission to enhance her adventures. She is a vibrant paradox to Harold's gloomy existence. Their unusual friendship blooms with Maude teaching Harold the art of truly living. As their bond deepens, Harold finds himself falling for this eccentric octogenarian. Amidst his mother's relentless matchmaking attempts, which he disrupts with his signature fake suicides, Harold announces his intent to marry Maude. Little does he know, Maude has a life-changing surprise waiting for him. This poignant tale of 'Harold and Maude' is a coming-of-age journey brimming with dark humor and an unconventional romance that thrives on the poles of life and death. It is a story that encapsulates the wonders and possibilities of life, challenging our perceptions of love, happiness, and the significance of truly living.
