Plot

In the throes of World War II, two contrasting lives intertwine in an unexpected tale of shared destiny. Henri Fortin, a former boxer relegated to a life of poverty and illiteracy, becomes the unlikely companion of Ziman, a wealthy Jewish lawyer hailing from the cosmopolitan heart of Paris. Their paths intersect when Fortin accepts the responsibility of guiding Ziman's family to the sanctuary of neutral Switzerland. As the shadow of war lengthens over their journey, the pages of Victor Hugo's classic masterpiece, "Les Miserables," become the shared soundtrack of their odyssey. Intrigued by the novel, Fortin implores the Zimans to narrate this literary gem, finding in its narrative a mirror reflecting his own struggles. The film unfolds as a unique adaptation of Hugo's work, drawing parallels between the tale of the downtrodden Jean Valjean and the life of our protagonist, Fortin. Throughout the film, each character is catapulted into circumstances echoing Hugo's timeless narrative, creating a resonant and captivating exploration of life, struggle, and destiny. "Les Miserables" (1995) weaves a rich tapestry of interconnected stories, imitating art with life and life with art, that will leave you pondering the eternal question of fate versus free will.
