Plot

Layla, an 18-year-old prodigy of Moroccan origin, is a product of Amsterdam's cultural mosaic. Intelligent, quick-witted, and tenacious, she finds herself in the throes of a society succumbing to the fear of terror. Suspicion lingers in the air, tainting the innocence of headscarves and beards, and stirring a potent mix of frustration and faith within her. As the world around her tightens its grip, Layla finds solace in a community of Muslims fighting for their religious freedom. Her activism takes the form of chilling online videos showcasing the atrocities in Syria and Gaza, and charged political pamphlets. Simultaneously, she finds herself entranced by Abdel's charismatic charm. The arrest of her peace-loving brother and the mounting conflict with her parents leaves Layla alienated, pushing her towards a life-altering decision - marrying Abdel and leaving her home behind. The newlyweds traverse the country, spreading their faith, fundraising for their cause, living on the razor's edge of danger and devotion. But when an encounter with the Belgian police forces them to flee, they find themselves in the heart of the Middle East. Here, Layla's ideals are both nurtured and challenged, leading her to a crossroads where she faces an unthinkable choice. The narrative of Layla M. is a riveting exploration of faith, identity, and the profound impact of societal prejudice.
