In the tumultuous year of 1948, an aged Vengadam (Prakash Raj), finds himself freed from the confines of his prison cell. As he is escorted by two stern policemen on a rickety bus back to his hometown of Kanchipuram, the past and present collide. Each jostle of the bus, each peculiar sound, serves as a poignant reminder of his life, unfolding the rich tapestry of his memories as a silk weaver. In the heart of Kanchipuram, Vengadam was revered as a master weaver, his nimble fingers spinning dreams into the sheer threads of silk sarees. Yet the bitter irony that shrouded his life was that despite living amongst the looms, he could never afford the very luxury he created. His earnings, a meager sum of 7 rupees per saree, barely sufficed for survival, let alone the purchase of a silk saree. Vengadam's life took a turn when he married his beloved wife (Shreya Reddy). Despite his dream of seeing her draped in a silk saree, he had to reconcile with reality. However, the birth of their daughter rekindled his ambition. Breaking norms, he whispered a daring promise into his newborn's ears—she would be married off in a silk saree. This audacious vow, met with skepticism from his wife and villagers, became the driving force of his life. As years rolled by, Vengadam strived to fulfill his promise, stashing away his earnings. But soon, fate played a cruel hand when his brother-in-law's business crumbled. To save his sister from abandonment, he was forced to part with his hard-earned savings, smashing his dream to smithereens. Kanchivaram (2008) weaves the tale of a man caught in the threads of poverty, systemic oppression, and unfulfilled dreams, relentlessly battling to keep his promise in a world that offers nothing but hurdles.
