Plot

In the whirlwind of 1936 London, we find the vivacious Julia Packett (Greer Garson), a chorus girl constantly dancing on the edge of financial ruin. Yet, Julia always pirouettes her way out of trouble, her infectious charm and captivating smile enchanting the men around her. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she receives an invitation to the high-society wedding of her estranged daughter, Susan Packett (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), to the aristocratic Roderick Pennystone. This revelation of her past as a wife and mother is unknown to her current companions, adding a layer of mystery to her already captivating persona. Julia's marriage to the equally refined William Sylvester Packett (Walter Pidgeon) had blossomed during the turbulent times of World War I, only to wilt under the weight of class differences and their clashing lifestyles. Having parted ways when Susan was merely an infant, Julia chose to leave her daughter with William, knowing her late-night, nomadic lifestyle was not fit for a young child. William's domineering mother saw to it that Julia was denied any contact with her daughter, leaving Susan unaware of her vibrant mother's existence. Despite her empty pockets and lack of suitable wedding attire, Julia boldly accepts the mysterious invitation, much to the astonishment of the Packett family who deny having extended the invite. Julia's arrival injects a newfound energy into the stately Packett mansion, creating waves as she reconnects with William and meets Susan for the first time. These encounters become even more entangled as she crosses paths with the Ghenoccio acrobatic troupe on her journey to Paris, especially the smitten strongman Fred Ghenoccio (Cesar Romero) and William's wealthy friend, the jovial Colonel Bruce (Willowbrook Nigel Bruce), affectionately known as "Bunny". Julia's presence stirs up old passions and incites new conflicts, inviting the ire of her stern mother-in-law and keeping potential suitors on their toes. Amidst this chaos, Julia perceives a mismatch in her daughter's impending marriage, sensing that Susan's heart truly lies with Ritchie Lorgan (Peter Lawford), the bohemian muralist employed by the Packetts. As Julia navigates this whirlwind, she hopes to guide Susan towards her true love, all while rekindling the spark with William, and juggling her relationship with Fred and the generous Colonel Bruce. The unfolding events promise a delightful mix of love, intrigue, and mischief, all wrapped in the charm of Julia's misbehaviour.
