In the bleak year of 1829, young Jane Eyre (Peggy Ann Garner), a diminutive and plain orphan, is heartlessly banished by her spiteful aunt, Mrs. Reed (Agnes Moorehead), to the austere confines of Lowood Institution. Under the merciless rule of Mr. Henry Brocklehurst (Henry Daniell), Jane endures a stern childhood, the only solace being her friendship with the kind-hearted Helen Burns (Dame Elizabeth Taylor). Tragedy strikes when Jane loses Helen, her sole source of comfort in this harsh world.
