Inferno (1980)

In the dim recesses of her New York Art Deco apartment, young American poet, Rose Elliot, stumbles upon a chilling discovery. Amidst the building's labyrinthine basement, she uncovers a mysterious leather-bound book, "The Three Mothers," a cryptic tome hinting at a terrifying reality. As she delves into the book's grim tales, Rose becomes convinced that her once aristocratic abode is now a sinister sanctuary for the malevolent Mater Tenebrarum, the dreaded Mother of Darkness. Haunted by her findings and a secret suspicion that gnaws at her sanity, Rose pens a frantic letter to her brother, Mark, a musicology student studying the harmonious symphonies of Rome. The eerie tales of witches she unravels in her missive ignite a spark of intrigue in him, compelling him to delve into the depths of the occult. As the siblings independently explore this chilling conspiracy of evil, the shadows of their once safe havens start to contort with horrors unknown. Mark finds himself ensnared in an endless skein of gruesome murders and mysterious disappearances, each one drawing him further into a surreal nightmare. Meanwhile, Rose is left to wonder: where do the nightmarish corridors of her ominous building lead? Their investigations set in motion a terrifying dance with darkness, a chilling ballet with an unseen force, where every step could be a stride into an abyss.
