In the Land of Women (2007)

In the aftermath of a heartbreaking split from his model-actress girlfriend, Sofia Buñuel, soft-core porn screenwriter Carter Webb, finds himself at a crossroads. With his heart pinned on his sleeve and his creative passions dwindling, the twenty-six-year-old Angeleno yearns for a refuge from his familiar surroundings. In an endeavour to heal and find solace, Carter decides to swap the glitz of Los Angeles for the quaint monotony of Michigan, choosing to care for his eccentric, possibly hypochondriac grandmother, Phyllis, in her home. As he attempts to navigate his new life, Carter continues to chase his Hollywood dreams remotely, sending scripts electronically and tackling filming issues over the phone. Meanwhile, he embarks on a personal project, a non-porn screenplay that he's been yearning to pen since high school. His quest for inspiration leads him across the street, where he encounters the intriguing Hardwicke family: the seemingly stoic Nelson, his quietly struggling wife Sarah, and their two daughters, the precocious preteen Paige and the angst-ridden Lucy. Carter unwittingly finds himself drawn into the whirlpool of the Hardwickes' lives, leaving an indelible mark on each woman. Paige, the younger Hardwicke daughter, harbours a blossoming crush on the charming stranger, while Lucy grapples with her own relationship troubles and strained family dynamics. Sarah, on the other hand, finds in Carter a confidante, someone to share her deepest worries with, worries she cannot even voice to her own family. As Carter becomes an unlikely pillar of support for the Hardwicke women, he begins to reflect on his own life, his shattered romance with Sofia and the choices that led him to the land of women. This unlikely journey of self-discovery and empathy helps Carter regain perspective and self-confidence, as he learns to navigate the turbulent waters of heartbreak and love anew.
