In the clandestine universe of a polygamist community, sequestered from the prying eyes of the outside world, resides Judith Leavitt, a third-generation member and junior wife of the revered Bishop Josiah Leavitt. This cryptic society operates on the belief that heaven's passage is secured through polygamy and prolific procreation, a conviction that often coerces underage girls into becoming brides of influential men.
Despite the oppressive system, Judith has managed to carve out a peculiar niche as Josiah's favored wife, a privilege threatened when she dares to shield their twelve-year-old daughter, Alice, from this harsh reality. A defiant act that spurs Josiah to banish her temporarily, sparking a realization in Judith about the absence of freedom and the overarching dominance of male community leaders.
