I, the Worst of All (1990)

As new leadership takes the helm in 17th century Mexico, an intriguing figure, the local nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), captivates the appointed viceroy and his wife with her intellect and charm. However, her liberal spirit and unconventional writings make her a thorn in the side of the stringent archbishop, who perceives her as a symbol of European decadence. In an effort to curb her influence, the archbishop orchestrates the rise of an austere and strict abbess. Despite this, Sor Juana's poetic prowess flourishes under the patronage of the viceroy's wife, leading to the creation of passionate verses that the archbishop deems scandalous. Thanks to the viceroy's protection, Sor Juana remains unscathed. However, when the viceroy is succeeded and returns to Spain with his wife, Sor Juana finds herself defenseless against the ensuing wave of envy and retribution. A treacherous bishop betrays her, and her confessor seeks to crush her spirit. As she confronts plague, a judgemental tribunal, and her own self-condemnation as "the worst of all", the illustrious life of this remarkable poet draws to a close.
