Plot

Once the toast of New York's theatre scene, playwright Nate (Jemaine Clement) finds himself floundering after his wife (Maria Dizzia) exits stage left, taking their son with her. Broke, heartbroken, and facing eviction, he reluctantly retreats to the suburban sanctuary of his father, Bob's (Elliott Gould), New Jersey retirement golf community. Bob, a quick-witted widower, uses humor as his shield to parry the blows of life, including the loss of his cherished wife, a trait that grates relentlessly on Nate. Believing his son could use a dose of discipline, Bob appoints Nate to work under Ellis (Willie Carpenter), a former Marine who manages the community's onsite operations. During his employment, Nate stumbles upon a lively troupe of senior citizens rehearsing for a musical, and he's roped into helping them. However, he soon discovers that harmonizing with this vivacious, eccentric ensemble is no easy task. Among them is Dee (Annie Potts), who doesn't miss a beat in trying to matchmake Nate with her daughter, Allison (Ingrid Michaelson). Tensions reach a crescendo when an old video of Nate's previous play resurfaces, stirring up unresolved conflicts between him and Bob. As the final act unfolds, both father and son recognize that they narrate life in their unique ways and learn to value their contrasting perspectives. The plot of 'Humor Me' (2017) is a heartfelt symphony of humor, challenges, and unexpected bonds, where life's script is rewritten with a dash of humor and a lot of love.
