In the high-octane world of hot-rod racing, the Northup brothers, Jeff and Steve, were kings. The elder, Jeff, harnesses his mechanical genius to create a formidable hot-rod for his younger brother, Steve, their shared passion for the perilous pastime palpable. Their reckless pursuits find a semblance of safety when police detective Ben Merrill devises a supervised course to curtail the city's rising toll of hot-rod fatalities. Tragedy strikes when Steve loses his life in a race, the very car Jeff had built becoming an instrument of death. Overwhelmed by guilt, Jeff abandons the thrill of the race, his leadership void causing the racers to revert to the perilous streets. Amidst this chaos, a new racer, "Bronc" Talbott, roars into town, his sights set on more than just Jeff's relinquished title. He makes a play for Jeff’s girl, Lisa Vernon, attempting to claim all that was once Jeff's. Talbott's taunting escalates, eventually cornering Jeff into a race. The ensuing chaos results in the death of an innocent child. Amidst a whirlwind of accusations, evidence begins to mount against Jeff, suggesting he was at fault.
