Plot

In the 1950 movie "Harriet Craig", Joan Crawford portrays a woman who revels in the trappings of wedded bliss, yet is obsessively bent on manipulating those in her orbit. Harriet's domineering nature knows no bounds; she treats her doting husband Walter, played by Wendell Corey, more like a prized possession than a partner, constantly doubting his fidelity and even sabotaging his career advancement under the guise of concern for his alleged gambling problem. Her home, a fortress of control and deceit, is where she holds court, ruling with an iron fist over everyone, including her naive cousin Claire, whom she reduces to a glorified secretary, and her servants who bear the brunt of her tyranny as pseudo-slaves. Harriet's deceit extends to a deeply personal level, as she lies to Walter about her inability to bear children, placing her home and belongings on a pedestal far above human connection. The film takes a turn when Harriet's machinations interfere with Claire's budding romance with West Miller, Walter's assistant, triggering a chain of events that lead to Walter unearthing Harriet's web of lies and control. This discovery sets the stage for a climactic confrontation, promising to shake the very foundations of Harriet's meticulously crafted world. "Harriet Craig" is an intriguing exploration of one woman's desperate grasp on control and the lengths she will go to maintain it.
