Plot

In the shadowy realm of this semi-noir film, we find ourselves immersed in the early days of famed detective-fiction writer, Dashiell Hammett, known here as Sam. His past as a Pinkerton detective comes back to haunt him when his old mentor, Jimmy Ryan, appears unannounced at his San Francisco home. Ryan is on a desperate quest to find a cryptic Chinese woman, Crystal Ling, and calls upon a debt from Hammett's detective days to enlist his help. Crystal Ling, a figure as enigmatic as she is alluring, is no ordinary damsel. A former courtesan and adult film star, she has her hands on an explosive cache of photographs. The images capture San Francisco's elite in compromising situations, providing her with the leverage to demand a million-dollar ransom. With his health compromised by tuberculosis, Hammett finds himself batting not just the disease, but an antagonist police force, a dangerous gun-toting adversary, and the sting of betrayal from those he considered friends. Amidst this whirlwind, Hammett must navigate the treacherous terrains of power and corruption, all while striving to shield the influential from scandal and delivering a well-deserved blow to their collective arrogance.
