Plot

Returning from the tumult of Vietnam, Harry Bailey is caught in a new kind of warfare - one of intellect and ideology. As he seeks to secure his future through a master's degree in English, Harry navigates the volatile terrain of a college campus, a battleground of radical ideas and conservative resistance. Caught in the crossfire between the reactionary administration and the restless, often quixotic student body, Harry becomes an unlikely peacemaker. He is a hero to the radicals, yet he observes the absurdity splashed across both sides of this ideological battlefield. Amidst this educational uproar, Harry's personal life is far from quiet. His girlfriend Jan dreams of wedding bells and the comfort of suburban life. As the pressure mounts, Harry is cornered, and the tension culminates at his own master's degree dissertation meeting, just as the campus gears up for its latest protest. In "Getting Straight," Harry's struggle embodies the cultural crossroads of a generation, a riveting blend of personal ambition, love, and the quest for understanding amidst an era of societal upheaval.
