Plot

In the heart-wrenching opening of "Forbidden Games" set during World War II, a delicate five-year-old girl named Paulette witnesses the tragic loss of her parents and beloved pet in a devastating Nazi air raid while they are attempting to flee from Paris. Left orphaned and alone, she finds herself lost amidst the chaos, clutching the lifeless body of her dog in her small hands. Her path fatefully intertwines with Michel Dolle, an empathetic eleven-year-old peasant boy who discovers her aimlessly wandering in the aftermath of the attack. Moved by her plight, Michel brings her to the comforting embrace of his humble, rural home where she is warmly welcomed by his family. In this uncertain world, the two children find solace in their unlikely friendship, creating a sanctuary from the grim realities of war. As they grapple with the concept of death, their innocence is challenged. They embark on an emotionally charged journey, curating their own sacred space - a unique cemetery dedicated to animals and insects. To adorn their sanctuary, they resort to pilfering crosses from the local cemetery, a harmless act that soon invites unforeseen complications to Michel's family and their peaceful rural community. "Forbidden Games" is a poignant exploration of childhood innocence against the backdrop of war, beautifully capturing the resilience of the human spirit, the power of friendship, and the profound impact of loss. This captivating narrative weaves a tale where the stark realities of adult conflict and the purity of childlike perspectives are often at a jarring crossroads, making for a deeply moving cinematic experience.
