Grace Harlan, a meticulous writer for Fidelity Publishing, famous for its "How-to" style books, has her life meticulously charted out with her fiancé Cliff. Their two-year plan revolves around tireless work to afford a house in a posh suburban neighborhood before they marry. This need for control in Grace's life stems from the unforeseen death of her father. However, newlywed Jen, Grace's best friend and co-worker, disapproves of their workaholic lifestyle, fearing it will only distance them from friends and life's simple joys.
On the other side of the city, Steve Lockwood, a celebrated firefighter, is spiraling down a reckless path since his wife Molly's tragic death a year ago. Rejecting therapy and consumed by anger, he is suspended indefinitely by fire chief, Captain Washington. His younger brother Frank, also a firefighter and an unsuccessful Casanova, yearns for Steve to embrace life again instead of succumbing to solitude.
Fate interweaves their lives when Steve saves Grace from a house fire during his suspension. This serendipitous encounter nudges Grace into rethinking her regimented life, inspiring her to infuse passion into her work. Igniting a desire to write a book about the life at Steve's firehouse, she focuses on their taxing work and the comforting food they prepare in their downtime, with Steve known to be their finest chef.
