Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1935, "Fools' Parade" unveils the harrowing tale of three convicts, the grizzled murderer Mattie Appleyard (James Stewart), cunning bank robber Lee Cottrill (Strother Martin), and the youthful Johnny Jesus (Kurt Russell). After serving their sentences in a West Virginia prison, they emerge with a dream: to establish a general store funded by Mattie's $25,000 check, earned painstakingly over 40 years of prison labor. However, their path to redemption is obstructed by the dark machinations of two formidable foes: the duplicitous prison captain "Doc" Council (George Kennedy), and the scheming local banker, Homer Grindstaff (David Huddleston). The malevolent pair conspires to seize the ex-convicts' hard-earned money, orchestrating a deadly ambush at a railroad stop. When the ex-convicts miraculously escape their plotted demise, Council's henchmen commit a murder, cunningly pinning it on Mattie. Armed with dynamite pilfered from the deceased man, Mattie turns the tables and forces Grindstaff into cashing his check. As they divide their spoils and part ways with plans to reunite, the ex-convicts must outwit Council's relentless pursuit, while also navigating the desperate intentions of Cleo (Anne Baxter), a down-on-her-luck prostitute with her sights set on their fortune. In "Fools' Parade," every step towards freedom is a dance with danger, as these ex-cons strive to reclaim their lives in a world that would rather see them fail.
