In the heart of an ordinary neighborhood lies an extraordinary story. Flutter spins the tale of nine-year-old Johnathan, an imaginative boy who finds solace in the world of sea monsters and the companionship of his loyal 300 lb. pet pig, Wee Wee. However, Johnathan isn't like most children, his eyes "flutter" due to a condition called nystagmus, and he battles severe narrow angle glaucoma, a threatening illness that could plunge him into permanent blindness.
His mother, JoLynn, a solitary figure of strength and resilience, shoulders the responsibility of caring for Johnathan single-handedly as her husband, David, a hopeful singer/songwriter, embarks on a journey to secure his big break. Battling poverty and isolation, JoLynn cultivates hydroponic marijuana, transforming it into medicinal brownies to alleviate her son's agonizing condition, all while keeping it a secret from the world.
Their lifeline comes in the form of David's parents, Mark and Linda, who do their best to support JoLynn and Johnathan on their fixed income. However, Linda's disapproval of JoLynn's unconventional parenting style brews tension. She disapproves of Johnathan's increasing unruliness during David's absence, a discord that puts Mark in a crossfire between his wife and the daughter-in-law he cherishes.
Unbeknownst to JoLynn, Linda secretly weaves a legal web to snatch Johnathan's custody from her. Upon discovering this, JoLynn is pushed to the brink, leading her to sever the fragile ties with her in-laws. This precipitates a vortex of desperation, compelling JoLynn to make a life-altering decision that will forever reshape their world.
