Plot

In the turbulent heart of the American Civil War, a new wave of strategy takes hold as President Abraham Lincoln appoints the unconventional Ulysses S. Grant as Chief of Union Forces. Unleashing the thunderous might of total warfare upon the untouched serenity of the Shenandoah Valley, the South's breadbasket, Grant's decisive actions echo through the land. In response, the superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute takes a daring step, offering the strength of the 274-strong Corps of Cadets to shield the valley's vulnerable heart. Under the austere shadow of conflict, these youthful cadets—once sheltered within the institute's hallowed halls—embark on a journey northward, their destination being the geographical jugular of the strategic valley - New Market. This journey sees them abandon the remnants of their childhood, forcing them to confront the monstrous reality of an adult world marred by war. As the looming day of battle arrives, the weight of command rests heavily on the shoulders of Confederate general John C. Breckenridge. A man of political prowess, the former Vice President of the United States now stands as the commander of southern forces in the Valley. Encountering a dire predicament when Southern forces find themselves in peril, he makes an agonizing decision. Thrusting the young cadets into the tumultuous tides of combat, he challenges them to determine what they are truly fighting for. Based on true events of the American Civil War and culminating in the fierce Battle of New Market in May 1864, "Field of Lost Shoes" narrates the heroic saga of these teenage cadets, catapulted from the safety of academia into the brutal theatre of war.
