Plot

In this charming sequel to Father of the Bride (1950), Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) finds himself grappling with his new role as a grandfather. The news of his daughter Kay's (Dame Elizabeth Taylor) pregnancy sends waves of excitement through everyone but him. Stanley, ever the practical man, is plagued by worries about the financial implications, especially considering the recent wedding expenses he shouldered for his son-in-law Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor). Stanley's wife and soon-to-be-grandmother Ellie (Joan Bennett) cannot contain her joy and proudly shares the news far and wide. Meanwhile, the overzealous grandparents, including Buckley's parents, seize control of redecorating the young couple's home, leaving Stanley feeling sidelined. As the anticipation builds, their lives are thrown into a whirlwind of false alarms and minor crises. When the baby finally arrives, it seems that Stanley is the only one the newborn doesn't take a liking to, furthering his sense of alienation. However, an eventful stroll through the park turns into an unexpected adventure when Stanley loses track of his grandson, leading to an absolute panic. This alarming incident, however, brings about a poignant resolution to Stanley's struggle to connect with his new role and the newest member of their family.
