Plot

Elmer, a charming country lad, finds himself torn between his love for Nellie, and the lure of the big leagues when Mr. Wade, a representative from the Chicago Cubs, comes calling in his quaint hometown of Gentryville. Although Elmer's heart yearns for Nellie, her rejection propels him towards a new destiny in Chicago, where his extraordinary batting abilities crown him the king of batters, leading the Cubs to victory after victory. However, the bright lights of Chicago bring both triumph and trials for Elmer. He faces unexpected challenges when he unwittingly strolls into the nefarious world of gambling, mistaking chips for mere playthings, and lands in a hefty debt of $5000. Meanwhile, his personal life crumbles when Nellie, on a visit to Chicago, catches him in an intimate moment with Evelyn, leading to a heartbreaking estrangement. Battling heartache, a newfound animosity with his teammates, and dealing with the ruthless gamblers to whom he owes a fortune, Elmer mysteriously vanishes just as the Cubs are poised on the brink of the World Series. Amidst the hustle of the city and the tension of the impending championship, Elmer must navigate his way through crooked pitchers and deceitful gamblers, while trying to mend his fractured heart. Elmer, The Great, is a compelling tale of love, betrayal and baseball, as a simple country boy must find his way through the underbelly of a city that shines as bright as his dreams, but is fraught with trials he never imagined.
