Plot

In a celestial comedy of errors, Lance Barton (Chris Rock), an ambitious yet unfunny comedian and bike messenger, finds himself prematurely yanked from the mortal coil. Though he's fifty years early for his heavenly reservation, an overzealous celestial aide, Mr. Keyes (Eugene Levy), accidentally whisks him away just before a destined traffic accident. This blunder lands him in the celestial equivalent of a high-end nightclub, managed by the gritty and pragmatic head angel, Mr. King (Chazz Palminteri). With Lance's earthly return in his original form ruled out, he's presented with an extraordinary proposition. He must inhabit the body of the affluent, elderly Caucasian tycoon, Charles Wellington III (Brian Rhodes), until a more suitable vessel is available. Amidst the opulence of a Park Avenue penthouse, Lance finds himself navigating an unfamiliar world of servitude and privilege as he fine-tunes his comedy act for a crucial performance at the legendary Apollo Theatre. Life as a stern old man takes a peculiar turn when Lance falls for the fiery Sontee Jenkins (Regina King), a passionate activist challenging Wellington's company. On top of this unexpected romance, he must also contend with a brewing scandal involving Wellington's wife, her illicit lover, and a deadly plan aimed at the very body he now occupies. This divine mix-up leads Lance on a journey that's as comically absurd as it is transformative, proving that you truly can't judge a soul by its earth-bound casing.
