Haunted by her father's death and chafing under the scrutiny of her mother Ginny and step-father Dave Dabrowski, Kit Gordy has spiraled into the life of a troubled teen. After a failed arson attempt on her high school, Kit finds herself expelled. However, her unruly path takes an unexpected turn when Dr. Heather Sinclair, a staff member of the mysterious Blackwood Boarding School, offers her a place for the next academic year. Reluctantly enrolled by Ginny in an effort to reform her, Kit is whisked away to Blackwood, a sprawling, antiquated mansion shrouded in darkness and nestled within an isolated forest. At this enigmatic institution, she meets her companions: the pleasant Izzy, introverted Ashley, hesitant Sierra, and the audacious Veronica, each as troubled as Kit herself. During an introductory dinner, they are introduced to the stern headmistress Madame Duret and Blackwood's eclectic staff, including maths teacher Professor Farley, music instructor Jules Duret, and Madame Duret's brusque assistant Mrs. Olonsky. Stranded in a world devoid of modern technology, Kit and her peers find themselves gradually becoming consumed by their respective passions: Izzy by mathematics, Sierra by painting, Ashley by writing, and Kit herself by piano, while Veronica remains strangely resistant. As Kit grapples with her growing infatuation for Jules, Madame Duret's son, and unexplained memory lapses, she joins forces with Veronica to unearth the cause behind their transformation. Their investigation leads them to the dilapidated and forbidden wing of Blackwood, where they discover a chilling secret shared by all students, past and present. The girls soon realize that the supernatural forces lurking within Blackwood's walls are not only amplifying their talents but also orchestrating a sinister fate. Confronted by this grim revelation, Kit and Veronica must find a way to escape Blackwood's spectral clutches before they become its next victims.
