Plot
In the bleak underbelly of modern Europe, over ten thousand minor refugees seek solace, half of them navigating the labyrinthine roads of Italy. "Despite the Fog" offers a poignant cinematic window into the life of one such soul, Ali-Musa Sarhan, a refugee orphaned when his parents tragically succumbed to the treacherous waters on their rubber boat journey to the Italian coast, their dreams of a brighter future swallowed by the sea.
In the heart of this grim narrative, a glimmer of hope emerges in the form of a grief-stricken couple, Valeria (Donatella Finokjaro) and Paolo (Giorgio Tirabasi), who find in Ali-Musa a balm for their own heartache, their son Mark having been cruelly snatched away too soon. As they embrace the young refugee as a symbolic echo of their lost child, they find themselves battling a rising tide of hostility from their community and even their own kin, who fail to comprehend their choice to shelter Muhammad.
"Despite the Fog" is not only a tale of heartbreak and compassion; it is also a stark reflection of a world slipping deeper into a xenophobic abyss, a world where understanding and acceptance are increasingly shrouded in a fog of prejudice and fear.
