Desperation (2006)

Driving through the desolate expanse of the Nevada desert, en route to Salt Lake, the unsuspecting couple, Peter Jackson and his wife Mary, find themselves ensnared in the web of madness spun by Sheriff Collie Entragian. Pulled over for a missing license plate, their journey takes a sinister turn as they are wrongfully arrested after the sheriff discovers a package of marijuana in their trunk. The couple's claims of a stolen car fall on deaf ears as they are transported to the eerie ghost town of Desperation, where an ominous sight awaits them - the town is littered with corpses, a chilling testament to Entragian's deranged tyranny. Meanwhile, the successful yet haughty writer, John Edward Marinville, traveling across the country on his motorcycle, also falls prey to the sheriff's insanity. Separated from his assistant Steve Ames and the hitchhiker Cynthia Smith by Entragian's machinations, he manages a distorted distress call before his capture. Locked in the jailhouse of Desperation, Mary discovers another couple - the Carvers, their religious son David, and an old local named Tom Billingsley, all caught in Entragian's malevolent trap. As the survivors manage a daring escape and converge with the awaiting Steve and Cynthia, the truth behind Entragian's madness comes to light. David reveals the story of a group of Chinese slaves who, one hundred and fifty years prior, released an earth demon - the "waisin" known as Tak, or the unformed heart - during a catastrophic mine collapse. While the slaves perished, something unspeakable crawled out from the depths, something that now possesses Entragian and grants him the power to change forms and command an array of creepy creatures. With the town of Desperation under Entragian's supernatural control, the group, led by David and fortified by faith, must wage a battle against the ancient, pagan god Tak, in a desperate bid to free the world from its unyielding evil.
