Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)

Caught in the monotony of her suburban life, Roberta Glass, a housewife from Fort Lee, New Jersey, finds thrill and intrigue in reading personal classifieds, particularly drawn to a sequence of ads titled 'Desperately Seeking Susan'. The consistent author of these ads, Jim, appears to be trying to keep in touch with a woman named Susan, who continually moves around the country, cloaked in mystery and allure. Roberta's curiosity soon morphs into an obsession, leading her on a whimsical journey to New York, to the backdrop of an ad directing Susan to meet Jim in Battery Park. There, Roberta spots Susan, a vibrant, wild woman, clad in a distinctive leather jacket, her demeanor a stark contrast to Roberta's sheltered existence. In a twist of fate, Roberta acquires Susan's iconic jacket and subsequently suffers from amnesia, a turn of events that places her in the center of Susan's chaotic world. As she navigates through this new reality, she believes herself to be Susan, which doesn't go unnoticed by Dez, a friend of Jim's who is tasked with looking after Susan but has never met her. As a movie projectionist and rock musician, Dez finds himself falling for the woman he believes to be Susan, while Roberta, in her newfound freedom, reciprocates his feelings. Unbeknownst to Roberta, the jacket she now owns marks her as a target for a ruthless criminal, Wayne Nolan, who is after a pair of priceless Egyptian earrings in Susan's possession. Upon discovering this, Susan embarks on a mission to find the woman who has inadvertently stepped into her shoes, not only to reclaim her belongings but also to warn her of the imminent danger. As Roberta's husband Gary inches closer to finding his missing wife, Jim returns to the city searching for Susan, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding drama. The plot thickens, leading to a crescendo of revelations and encounters that intensify as Roberta teeters on the edge of regaining her memory, weaving a compelling tale of mistaken identity, uncharted romance, and deadly pursuit.
