Plot

When Maggie Wheeler, a college English Literature professor, catches her lawyer husband, Tom Webber, in an affair with his paralegal Brigitte, she is devastated. After a 25-year marriage and a daughter in college, the revelation of his betrayal leaves her feeling lost and abandoned. Consequently, she divorces Tom, who confesses he's in love with his mistress. In an attempt to heal and energize herself, Maggie decides to take a sabbatical and return to the place of her youth and first love, Little Bear Lake, Minnesota. There, in the late 1960s, she worked at a dance hall called the Harvest Moon and fell for a local boy named Patrick Flemming. Their romance was intense but unconsummated, abruptly ending when Maggie had to return home to care for her ailing, widowed father. The memories of that summer are reignited when she stumbles upon old love letters from Patrick, and she hopes to rekindle the feelings of that time. Upon her arrival, she is disheartened to find the Harvest Moon boarded up and derelict. However, hope flickers when she reconnects with the previous owners, Gil and Harriet Finnigan, and their thrice-divorced daughter, Claire. From Claire, Maggie learns that Patrick has since passed away. Undeterred, she decides to resurrect the Harvest Moon and restore its former glory, setting an ambitious goal to reopen it by the actual harvest moon. The man she hires to oversee the renovation is Patrick's son, John Flemming. John's striking resemblance to his father stirs up a whirlpool of emotions within Maggie, making it increasingly difficult to spend time with him. As they work together, John begins to fall for Maggie, ignorant of her past with his father. Simultaneously, Maggie grapples with her growing feelings for John - is it him she's falling for or just a longing for a ghost from her past? Engaged to a local woman named Amy, John rejects her request to move to Chicago, choosing instead to stay and work on restoring the Harvest Moon. As the renovation progresses and the grand reopening is a roaring success, both Maggie and John must confront their shared past and decide whether to let history dictate their future. "Dancing at the Harvest Moon" is a poignant tale of love, loss, and second chances, where the past and present intertwine in the heart of a woman trying to find her way after heartbreak, and a man unknowingly connected to her past. The dance hall, once vibrant and now being reborn, mirrors their journey, becoming a character in itself, embodying the spirit of resilience and the power of enduring love.
