In the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, near the French border, lies the stage for a chilling tale rooted in folklore and fear. Here, we meet Sam, a 12-year-old boy burdened by the relentless mockery of his "Pathfinder" scout troop and its leader, Peter, a man who seemingly takes perverse pleasure in Sam's humiliation. This year, their annual woodland camping trip takes an eerie turn as tales of the legendary trickster, Kai, dance around the campfire, igniting the cool night air with whispers of mischief and looming danger. Sam, an endearing blend of nerdiness and imagination, stands out as the troop's proverbial laughingstock. His only shield against the troop's unkind jests is the fair deputy leader, Kris, who offers him a semblance of protection. As the troop delves deeper into the foreboding woods, a series of chilling, bloody events unfold, hinting at a sinister presence lurking in the shadows. In an inexplicable twist, Sam stumbles upon a peculiar tree-house where he encounters an enigmatic creature, none other than the infamous Kai of the campfire tales. But this Kai, far from being a mere mischief-maker, harbors a dark, twisted secret that threatens to shatter the tranquility of their camping trip. As Sam forms an unlikely bond with Kai, he finds his warnings fall on deaf ears, with his mates' disbelief only intensifying as the blood-stained terror escalates. Will they believe him before it's too late, or will the legend of Kai prove to be a deadly reality?
