Plot

In the 1940 adaptation of "Congo Landing," we journey with Maisie Ravier, a charismatic yet penniless vaudeville performer, as she navigates the rugged landscapes of Africa. Misfortune lands her in Kurmala, West Africa, with no means to travel to her next gig in Lagos. Driven by desperation, Maisie stows away on what she believes is a freighter to Lagos, only to find herself aboard a riverboat heading upstream into the heart of the jungle. The only other soul aboard is the enigmatic American, Michael Shane, a former physician now turned recluse. Shane is a man seemingly at odds with the world, retreating to his rubber plantation that he bought cheaply due to its remote location. When Maisie is discovered, a clash of personalities ensues, setting the stage for a tension-filled journey. Their voyage abruptly halts when their boat succumbs to technical difficulties, leaving them stranded amidst dense jungle terrain. Forced to traverse miles through the wilderness, Maisie and Michael seek refuge at the medical station associated with the Atkinson Rubber Plantation. Dr. John McWade, a dedicated physician and researcher, and his wife, Kay, inhabit this isolated outpost. As time goes on, Maisie uncovers the layers of Michael's past life as a doctor while observing the strained dynamics between John and Kay. Kay, yearning for the comforts of her past life, begins to be attracted to the aloof Michael, initiating a complex love triangle. However, the group soon faces a greater danger. The local population, feeling neglected by John's relentless focus on research, are reverting to their old ways, resorting to the guidance of witch doctors. These witch doctors are willing to eliminate any white intruders to maintain their control over the superstitious locals. Caught in a dangerous crossfire, Maisie finds herself playing peacemaker and counselor, striving to reconcile the strained relationships while warding off the looming threat from the natives. As tension mounts, survival becomes a game of wits and courage, with Maisie and the others needing to outsmart the witch doctors and navigate the treacherous emotional terrain within their group.
