Coming Through the Rye (2016)

"Coming Through the Rye" is a poignant tale of adolescence unfolding in the tumultuous year of 1969. Our protagonist is Jamie Schwartz, a 16-year-old misfit, grappling with his isolation at an all-boys' boarding school, his sensitivity making him a square peg in a world of round holes. Jamie finds solace in the pages of J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", so much so that he believes he is destined to portray Holden Caulfield, the novel's rebellious protagonist, on stage and reimagines the book as a play. However, his passion for the novel and its author doesn't sit well with his schoolmates, leading to a series of harsh confrontations. Longing for understanding and validation, Jamie embarks on an audacious journey to find the elusive Salinger. On this quest, he is accompanied by Deedee Gorlin, an eccentric local girl who adds an unpredictable spark to his journey. This odyssey to the mountains of New Hampshire is more than a mere search for a reclusive author; it's a rite of passage for an idealistic teenager. Amidst the trials, tribulations, and unexpected companionship, Jamie stumbles into a world of self-discovery. The journey evolves into a voyage of sexual awakening, a tender exploration of love, and an introspective quest for purpose. Inspired by the filmmaker's personal narrative, "Coming Through the Rye" is a heartfelt reflection on the joys and jolts of growing up, and the timeless pursuit of finding one's place in the world.
