Plot

Chevalier (2023) tells the lavish historical tale of Joseph Bologne, a brilliant Black composer and violin virtuoso (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance), who rises from the shadows of obscurity to the dazzling lights of French aristocracy. Born the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, his talent and ambition are as vast as the chasm between his origins and his aspirations. Bologne, who earns the title of Chevalier, becomes an integral part of Marie Antoinette's court. His extraordinary musical prowess, combined with his skill as a fencer, places him on a pedestal in a world that normally views his race with disdain. Yet, his ambitions stretch further, aspiring to the leadership of the Paris Opera, a goal that promises fame, opportunity, and love but threatens to test his resolve at every juncture. In a society teetering on the brink of revolution, Bologne finds himself entangled in an ill-fated romance and a bitter fallout with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton), testing not just his loyalty to the court but his pursuit of equality. As the world he's climbed so hard to reach begins to crumble, he is forced to confront where his true allegiances lie. Chevalier is a captivating exploration of an extraordinary life, a true story of ambition, love, and the struggle for equality in a world on the edge of radical change.
