Plot

In the heart of Tuscany, a French woman, enraptured by the intellectual allure of British writer James Miller, attends his lecture. Miller, middle-aged and justifiably bitter, has recently published a riveting exploration of copies versus original works. Yet, the woman's commitment to her son compels her to exit the lecture prematurely, leaving behind only her phone number in the hands of a mutual acquaintance for James. A twist of fate brings them together the next day at her quaint antique shop, where James, intrigued by her, invites her on a casual drive. She, however, has other plans, steering their journey towards the picturesque village of Lucignano. On their voyage, they exchange thoughts on his book, their words mingling with the autograph strokes on the six books she had purchased. Upon their arrival, the villagers innocently mistake them for husband and wife. The woman, perhaps seeking a break from reality, decides to immerse herself in this role-play. James, despite his initial reticence, assumes the part of her husband. As they traverse through the cobblestoned streets, delving into the art that adorns the village and unravelling the nature of their relationship, the line blurs between their facade and reality. In Certified Copy, a day's journey unfolds into a profound examination of art, authenticity, and relationships, where what is revealed and what remains concealed paint an intriguing tableau of human connection.
