Plot

In the aftermath of a high-stakes street race that ends in a catastrophic plunge off a bridge, Mary Henry miraculously surfaces from the murky depths of the river, the lone survivor of the ill-fated car carrying three friends. Emerging as a living enigma, Mary finds herself in a strange limbo, disconnected and aloof from the life she once knew. To escape the haunting memories of the accident, she relocates to a distant Utah town, accepting a job as a church organist, a peculiar choice given her indifference towards religion. As Mary embarks on her journey to Utah, her life takes a sinister turn. She becomes haunted by the relentless appearance of an enigmatic man, an eerie apparition that seems to lurk in the edges of her reality. Alongside these chilling visions, Mary is plagued by a series of uncanny phenomena - moments of possession, bouts of apparent invisibility, and an inexplicable magnetism towards an abandoned carnival ground on the town's outskirts. The spectral figure and the dilapidated carnival site become inextricably linked in Mary's mind, tugging at her with an irresistible allure. At the same time, she finds herself torn between repulsion and a strange need for companionship with her lecherous neighbor, John Linden. Even as she seeks the help of a therapist, she can't shake off the feeling that the secretive carnival and her phantom stalker hold the key to her spiritual apathy and the unsettling occurrences that shadow her existence. In this chilling tale, Mary must confront the personal demons of her spiritual estrangement, and unearth the truth that lurks in the abandoned pavilion, as she teeters on the precipice between reality and the spectral realm. "Carnival of Souls" (1962) is a riveting exploration of a woman's struggle with her own existence, set against the eerie backdrop of an abandoned carnival, with a spectral phantom as her relentless pursuer.
