Cannery Row (1982)

In the 1940’s, the once bustling heart of Monterey, California, dubbed Cannery Row, has become a haven for the luckless and the lost. Its streets, dotted with now desolate fish canneries, are home to a motley crew of outcasts who, despite their destitution, wouldn't dream of leaving their beloved derelict neighborhood. A beacon of respectability among them is Doc, a solitary marine biologist and former baseball star. He scrapes by, supplying marine specimens for scientific research, while wrestling with the ghosts of his past and seeking a purpose that eludes him. Doc's world turns on its axis when the fiery Suzy DeSoto, a headstrong drifter with little to her name, stumbles into town. Her struggle to find work leads her to become a floozy in the local brothel, a role her abrasive demeanor hardly suits. Doc and Suzy, both lost souls, are instantly drawn to each other, their attraction as potent and unpredictable as a bottle of uncorked champagne. Yet their clashing personalities create fireworks of a less romantic kind. Cannery Row's ragtag ensemble of lovable rogues, led by the well-meaning but perpetually inebriated Mack and his band of merry misfits, take it upon themselves to kindle a flame between Doc and Suzy. Their well-intentioned meddling, however, often leads to more chaos than cupidry. As Doc and Suzy stumble towards understanding, they must first find their own footing in this world, before they can fully commit to someone else, be it each other or an unexpected stranger.
