Plot

In the sultry summer of 1936, in a quaint Russian village, the celebrated revolutionary Colonel Kotov savors a peaceful life with his young wife, their six-year-old daughter Nadia and an ensemble of family and friends. The tranquility of their idyllic days is abruptly shattered with the unexpected arrival of Cousin Dmitri from the bustling city of Moscow. His charismatic charm and piano mastery quickly endear him to the women and captivate the innocent Nadia. Yet, under the looming shadow of Stalin's repressions, even the most benign events harbor potential danger. Despite Dmitri's seemingly affable demeanor, Kotov is not deceived. He discerns the ominous undercurrents of this supposed social call, aware that in these times, the shrill ring of a telephone in the dead of the night can signal a chilling fate. As a revered revolution hero, Kotov finds himself ensnared in an insidious web of accusations, labeled as a foreign spy. These charges are ludicrous, a sentiment shared by all who know him. Yet, in the corrosive climate of Stalin's regime, truth becomes a mere pawn in the ruthless game of power. As such, the slow, inexorable erosion of Kotov's life is set into motion, presenting a haunting portrait of a man caught in the ruthless machinery of political repression.
