Buried Secrets (2015)

Sarah Winters, a fiercely independent single mother to thirteen-year-old Brooke, is a former homicide detective. After being dismissed from the force under a cloud of controversy involving accusations of corruption, she channels her experiences into her debut novel, "Justice in Limbo." Though her literary venture attracts a fanbase, it also cultivates a slew of critics who claim she used the real unsolved murder of Derek Saunders, a lowlife informant of her former partner and current lover, Barry Trent, as fodder for her fiction. Barry, now the police liaison to Mayor Patricia Harding, an ambitious politician locked in a grueling reelection campaign, sees his relationship with Sarah strained due to work pressure. Sarah’s rivalry with Joan Mueller, a fellow detective from their academy days who now sits as the Police Chief, further complicates matters when Mueller takes the helm of the Saunders' case. Sarah's novel and the Saunders' case begin to intertwine when new evidence surfaces that aligns alarmingly with the plot of her book. This fuels suspicions of Sarah's deeper involvement in the murder during her time as a detective. A startling revelation about Sarah's family history, previously unknown to her, only deepens her entanglement in the murder investigation. As Sarah battles to preserve her reputation from those determined to tarnish it, she also fights to stay out of prison for Saunders' murder. All the while, a mysterious, disheveled man lurks in the shadows, posing a potential threat to her and Brooke's safety. This enigmatic figure might hold the key to revealing Saunders' true killer and explaining why Sarah is embroiled in such turmoil.
