Bride Flight (2008)

In the year 1953, as the echoes of World War II still reverberate, the aftermath of a devastating flood triggers a wave of emigration from the Netherlands. Aboard a KLM flight bound for New Zealand, a part of an exhilarating race from London, we meet a diverse group of Dutch passengers, each carrying their own scars from the past. Among them is Frank de Rooy (Waldemar Torenstra), a man haunted by the loss of his family and colonial estate amidst the Indonesian civil war of Independence and the brutal Japanese occupation. On this journey, Frank crosses paths with several prospective mail-order brides, including Ada van Holland (Karina Smulders). Ada, a woman trapped in a proxy marriage to the solemn Calvinist Derk Visser (Micha Hulshof), finds herself entangled in a passionate affair with Frank before revealing her marital status. Meanwhile, Esther Cahn (Anna Drijver), a survivor from the horrors of a Jewish concentration camp, tactfully evades her own engagement to chase a career in the fashion industry. Esther discreetly ensures her son, Bobby (Mykola Allen), is adopted by the childless Marjorie Mullin (Elise Shaap), a woman who has otherwise led a content life with her husband Hans (Mattijn Hartemink). As the years unravel, fate weaves together the threads of their lives, leading them to cross paths once more. The climax of their intertwined destinies unfolds at Frank's funeral, a poignant reunion of survivors, each marked and molded by their own unique journey.
