Plot

On the brink of compulsory retirement, Marshall, a bitter and bigoted US Chief of Customs and Border Protection, exercises his final day of power at JFK airport by detaining a group of Latin American immigrants. This diverse group, hopeful yet vulnerable, is subjected to a grueling interrogation by Officers Bob Estevez and Sandra, who are tasked with discerning their true intentions. However, it's Marshall who takes center stage, wielding his prejudice like a weapon and bathing the immigrants in a torrent of humiliation. Among the detained is Nonato, a hardworking Brazilian who has spent a decade in North America building a humble catering business. Returning from a visit to his daughter Luiza in Brazil, Nonato presents his valid documentation, only to be met with Marshall's unfounded denial and denigration. A heated confrontation ensues, escalating rapidly into a nerve-shattering climax that spins the day into tragedy. In the aftermath, Marshall finds himself incarcerated, his abrasive authority stripped away. Years later, he emerges from prison, his health ravaged by a terminal kidney tumor and his spirit burdened by guilt. With a desperate hunger for redemption, Marshall embarks on a journey to the vibrant landscapes of Northeastern Brazil, seeking out Nonato's daughter, Luiza. Guiding him on this transformative journey is Bia, a young prostitute who, despite her own struggles, agrees to shepherd Marshall to Petrolina, where Luiza resides. As Marshall navigates this unfamiliar world, he is confronted by the raw realities of the country he had so easily dismissed, setting him on a path towards atonement. This poignant tale is a compelling exploration of prejudice, guilt, and the pursuit of redemption that is as harrowing as it is enlightening.
