Plot

In the year 2009, the life of retired teacher and spirited woman, Judie, takes a stark turn when she falls off her bike. Rushed to the hospital for a hip surgery, she emerges not with relief, but a harrowing journey of pain, a second surgery, and a coma that culminates in permanent brain damage. Her son, comedian and filmmaker Steve Burrows, starts documenting their ordeal in a personal video diary. What begins as a family's struggle against a cruel twist of fate soon manifests into a bold exploration of the American healthcare system - BLEED OUT. Blending elements of medical mystery and legal thriller, BLEED OUT throws light on a decade long battle that Burrows and his family endure. From convoluted medical bills to a maze of insurance-company bureaucracies, the film spirals into an intense investigation of the 'virtual' ICU unit where Judie was treated. The family, grappling with suspicions of inadequate care, finds themselves in the throes of a medical malpractice lawsuit. With a keen eye for detail, the film uncovers shocking realities of the healthcare system through court testimonies, undercover footage, and profound interviews. The narrative, punctuated with verité scenes shot over several years, uncovers a chilling fact - medical error is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. BLEED OUT is not just a son's search for answers, but a citizen's quest for justice. It is a cautionary tale that uses one family's experience to underscore deep-seated issues within America's health care system, suggesting potential remedies. As much a meditation on family as it is an investigative journey, BLEED OUT paints a raw, eye-opening account of a fight against a flawed system and the hope for a better future.
