In the vibrant heart of 1964 Havana, a young man named Reynaldo Arenas steps into the world of literature while working at the National Library. Born and raised in the rustic province of Oriente, Arenas has been nurturing a talent for writing since his youth. As he begins to accept his sexual orientation, he finds courage and inspiration in a circle of like-minded individuals, embarking on a journey that would ultimately see him recognized as a globally acclaimed author. Arenas' life is a tapestry of poetic episodes, woven with the threads of love, rebellion, and artistic expression. He encounters Pepe, a wealthy lover who ignites in him a tumultuous love-hate relationship that spans over years. His manuscripts manage to escape the confines of Cuba, but Arenas himself is not as fortunate. He is repeatedly arrested, detained, and imprisoned on flimsy pretexts, enduring two grueling years behind bars where he pens letters for fellow inmates and secretly smuggles out a novel. In May 1980, seizing a rare opportunity provided by Castro's purge of dissidents, Arenas finally escapes to the US. In Manhattan, he finds companionship with Lázaro Gomes Garriles, living in a state of poverty and statelessness. Yet, his past haunts him, plaguing his newfound freedom with its own set of demons. "Before Night Falls" is a poignant exploration of Reynaldo Arenas' life, from his humble beginnings to his final days in New York City. An artist in every sense of the word, Arenas wields his writing as a tool of revenge against the world that tried to suppress him, painting a vivid tapestry of resilience, passion, and unyielding spirit.
