Plot

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Bosnian War in 1993, "Beautiful People" paints a vivid canvas of intersecting lives in Britain, where natives and Bosnian refugees navigate the labyrinth of conflict, compassion, and change. The story unfolds in London in October, as England competes against Holland in the World Cup preliminaries. Amid this football frenzy, waves of refugees from ex-Yugoslavia arrive, bringing with them not just the scars of war, but also the simmering rivalries and political tensions of the Balkans. These refugees inadvertently weave themselves into the fabric of four distinctly English families, each affected in unique and profound ways by these unexpected encounters. Among them, Portia Thornton, a nurse-in-training, finds her heart drawn towards her patient, a Bosnian named Pero Guzina. This blossoming love endures the scrutiny of her upper-class family, who struggle to comprehend her affection for the foreigner. Meanwhile, in the maternity ward, Dr. Mouldy's interest is piqued by a Bosnian couple fearing the birth of their impending child, a predicament reflecting the doctor's own disintegrating family life. Parallelly, the BBC war correspondent Jerry Higgins, permanently disabled from his war coverage, develops an unusual wish, pushing him towards extraordinary lengths to fulfil it. The narrative takes an unexpected turn with Griffin Midge, a troubled and drug-addicted youth, whose life is irrevocably altered on witnessing the raw, devastating impact of the war first-hand. In the midst of these personal stories, a bitter feud emerges between a Serb and a Croat, their animosity intensified by forced cohabitation. As the plot unravels, "Beautiful People" weaves a complex tapestry of human interactions, where love meets misunderstanding, and survival encounters prejudice, all amidst the cacophony of a football match and the haunting echoes of a distant war.
